Death Guard

2014 Epic Winter Warmer

This Saturday I headed ninety miles up the road to Vanguard Wargaming in Bristol, for the Epic UK Winter Warmer. This is a slightly laid-back tournament with no restrictions on army lists so all sorts of experimental stuff can turn up.

Due to misjudging the length of the drive I arrived about 15m late so it was pretty much straight into the first round against Ben's Black Legion Chaos Marines.

Round One

Generally excellent scenery. This game was really an uphill struggle all the way, which turned out to be expected as I'd got paired against the winner of most of the previous Winter Warmer events. It eventually went 3-0 to Ben at the end of turn 3 but would presumably have been 5-0 if I hadn't managed to rally the remaining Plaguereaper, both Plaguehounds and a fourth formation, I think one of the Death Guard Retinues.

Death Guard Winter Warmer Progress

This Saturday I headed ninety miles up the road to Vanguard Wargaming in Bristol, for the Epic UK Winter Warmer. As always, a deadline is wonderful for getting painting done and I was prompted to make another Defiler and to get more paint on the existing models.

Defiler Seven

I started off with a couple of ideas based on Plaguebearer torsos on top of machines but ended up with no torso at all on the final model.

Epic Nurgle 'Cryxhound' Titan Painting

Following on from the conversion blog post, I've now started slapping paint on the Plaguehound conversions.

The first step was to break up the flat plane of the bases, for this I used some fragments of wall for scale and Platicine to add some hillocks.

Epic Nurgle 'Cryxhound' Titan Conversions

After not rating the EpicUK Plaguehound Titans all that highly a couple of test games including one changed my mind - horrifically short-ranged guns but horrifically nasty once they get close enough!

In keeping with the highly-converted aspect of my Death Guard army and inspired by some conversions of Cryx models on the Taccoms forums I started keeping an eye out for some cheap Bonejacks to use as the chassis. Here's the first mockup, done a couple of months ago. Suitably bulky and the sculpting style is surprisingly close to the the Jes Goodwin Reaver head.

Epic Death Guard Assemble!

The Death Guard are starting to come along pretty well, which is a good thing as I've got a bunch of games lined up this coming Saturday...

Front to back, left to right:

Nurgling/Plague Infestation, two Plaguereapers and a Defiler, Beasts of Nurgle.

Defiler formation, Death Guard Retinue, (rest of Plaguereaper formation), eight Plaguebearers and Mortation who's standing in as a Great Unclean One.

Contagion Engine formation including a couple of Basilisk stand-ins, Predator formation, Death Guard Retinue with Defiler.

Two objective markers, Warhound/Plaguehound Scout Titan, Death Guard Retinue with Plague Tower (Capital Imperialis) and three Land Raiders, third objective marker.

Epic Death Guard - More Defilers, Infestation

Woo paint! Last week I managed to get some paint on some of the Nurgling Infestation and a test of one of the Plaguebearers. Lots of washes and glazes, they were really fun to paint.

Construction - Epic Defiler and Infinity Szalmandra

In the last couple of weeks I started getting paint on the Epic objectives and the swarm:

Learning From Your Mistakes, Epic Edition

So, last night I played a game of Epic Armageddon, and lost 2-0.

This was partly down to a bit of rules confusion and some bad dice, but mostly down to bad tactical decisions...

Overview

This was a 2k game between my EpicUK Death Guard (the brand new update with Rhinos!) against Ronan's (new club member) EpicUK Ulthwe Eldar.

Epic Death Guard - Objectives & Nurglings

Following on from yesterday's blog post, I've been basing up a proxied 'Plague Zombie Infestation' and working on some objective markers.

The models for the zombies infestation are a mix of Space Marine-era Nurgling piles, some early Eighties Citadel C29 Creepy Crawlies range scorpions and some leech/centipede models from an unknown manufacturer - picked up at a games convention at some point. After trying out how they would look on 20mm ply discs I decided to go for 25mm discs instead as it would make the lips of the built-in bases easier to hide.

Epic Death Guard - Contagion Engine Conversions

It's been a while since I played Epic regularly but Epic Armageddon is seeing a bit of a revival at the club, so I've dug out the remnants of my semi-painted Nurgle forces.

To go with the painted Death Guard stands so first new addition will be a formation of Contagion Engines for some long-range firepower. Inspired by mageboltrat's excellent Bombard conversions that appear in the Epic UK army list PDF I decided to do my own conversions rather than tracking down some of the old metal catapult models.
