Scenery

Having been insanely busy recently I've not had much time for scenery or painting models - however the upcoming Autumn Challenge at the end of the month has prompted me to get some new scenery done!

Having received a big order from Antenociti recently, I started with the acrylic Police barriers.

In preparation for the local Legionary convention at the weekend I managed to get some scatter terrain done.

Constructed Containers

First off, a big bunch of colourful containers using the same card-wrapped-over-EPS construction method as the first one. Note that the taller pile at the back is a single piece representing four containers.

The Inspiration

Not having made any scenery for some time I've been starting to get itchy fingers. So when I saw this Tetris-inspired idea for a modular small storage space table on the Infinity forums I decided to start a new table.

Rather than a direct copy I'm using the basic idea of stackable tiles (and 3x3 16" tiles to make a 4x4' board) but making it more industrial/SF-looking by taking the idea of the big walls and cladding them with micro-corrugated card to make freight containers. As this is a table that doesn't need to be so easily transportable I have more freedom in the design.

Having recently been inspired by this thread on the Datasphere forums, I went trawling eBay for cheap model trees and ended up ordering £20 of stuff from the Far East.

First up are the cherry trees in blossom. Technically they're a bit small for 28mm scenery but clumped together in some planters they should look fine and add some much needed colour to my urban layouts. Note that everything's still a bit compressed from being posted...

I was walking through the local newsagent the other week and saw this mysterious package attached to a magazine:

Turns out it was a 1/72nd scale die-cast Chinook, part of a collectible helicopters magazine. As I'm always on the look out for more things to clutter up an Infinity battlefield and a Chinook is just the kind of old work-horse design I can see Ariadna using, I picked it up for the princely sum of £7.99.

The next step after getting the basic structure done was to add some detailing. This was going to take the form of an access ladder made by gluing strips of plasticard but instead I decided to go in the other direction and make them less accessible and went with a barbed wire anti-climbing defence. Plus the top part of the knee joint where the brass tubes are attached was closed off with some plasticard.

If you're a certain age, you'll have fond (or possibly envious) memories of the Seventies and Eighties Kenner Star Wars toys. I know I was envious of a friend who had the monstrously-large AT-AT. Fast-forward a few decades and AT-ATs and parts of AT-ATs come up pretty regularly on eBay - and every so often seeing some interesting bits for a good price coincides with having some hobby cash...

So back in April I spotted a set of four AT-AT legs going for the princely sum of 99p plus £4.49 postage and put in a bid on the off-chance, thinking that they'd make great support columns for some kind of raised railway. Enter the AT-AT Monorail!

First off, in 28mm scale, these things are HUGE. OK, the Nomad Moderator (minus her arms) is skinny, but she's dwarfed. On the right you can see the original concept, have the lower leg upright with the thigh at an angle and add some kind of strut (in red) that the rail could be supported by and have the train (in green) hanging off that. What would form the rail itself I had no idea.

Courtesy of eBay I picked up a box of empty dice cubes this week for use as ad towers for Infinity games. Grabbing a selection of posters designed by various Infinity forum members I quickly knocked together some box net layouts, printed them, cut them out, folded them, inserted them into the dice cubes and voilà!

After a very busy period I've applied paint to something for the first time in well over a month, and almost the fist blog post in that time as well...

Using a new technique, I think picked up from a comment by Precinct Omega, this was a cheap plastic truck picked up from a charity stall at a fair. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo before any work started but on the right you can see what colour it used to be - a bit too obviously a toy:
